In 1920, Republican candidate Warren G. Harding tried out for president against Democrat James Cox. Harding described what he
thought the United States needed after the crazy years of World War I. Cox, on the other hand, seemed to promise continued involvement in
foreign affairs, as his campaign was focused on the League of Nations. The voters liked the idea of focusing on domestic problems rather than foreign affairs, and
Harding was elected by a big differnce.
Harding did not have the same goals as the Progressives. His administration reduced taxes on rich people. In 1922, Congress raised
tariffs to their highest levels ever, which encouraged people to buy goods from the US. Lowering taxes on the rich was to encourage
them to spend the money they had saved on their taxes, this would supposedly stimulate the econom. The economy followed under the trickle-down policy, but poor and working-class Americans, who outnumbered the rich, grew poorer under it, not richer.
